Apple Crumble Recipe

This warming fruit dessert is quick and easy to make. We don't like the crumble topping to go soggy, so the apple layer is moist but not watery. If you prefer, you can use brown sugar in the topping instead of white sugar. We like to serve our crumble with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and/or custard.

Serves 6.

We use a 20ml tablespoon and 250ml measuring cup for all of our recipes.

4 medium apples (we used Granny Smith apples)
40ml (2 tablespoons) water
38g (2 tablespoons) sugar

Topping
75g (1/2 cup) plain flour
60g (3 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon) caster sugar
60g (scant 1/2 cup) finely chopped pecans or almonds
60g butter, chopped

Peel and core apples. Chop apples into eighths then cut each eighth in half. You should have about 450g of peeled, chopped apple.

Place apple, water and sugar in a large saucepan; cover and bring to the boil. Reduce heat so that the mixture is rapidly simmering. Simmer for about 10-12 minutes, or until apples are just soft.

Spoon cooked apple into a shallow ovenproof dish with a capacity of at least 1 litre (4 cups). We use a pie plate that measures 22.5cm across the top and 20cm across the bottom. © exclusivelyfood.com.au

Preheat oven to 190 degrees Celsius (170 degrees Celsius fan-forced).

Mix flour, caster sugar and nuts together in a large bowl. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour mixture until well combined.

Sprinkle topping over apple.

Bake for about 25 minutes, until topping is lightly browned. Serve hot or warm.

  3. Hi Eric, we haven't included any spices in our recipe due to personal preference, but if you like mixed spice or cinnamon they would be a great addition!

  7. Our preference would be 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon which could either be added to the cooked apple or mixed in with the flour.

  16. I think that it would be a nice addition to use granola and or rolled oats in the crumble mix with brown sugar, it gives it a wonderful crunchy sweet topping. I like it best served with custard. What do you think of my suggestion?

  17. Just read all the feed back. Will try the crumble with a combination of oats and coconut, instead of nuts, so I can use what's in the cupboard. It might taste like an Anzac biscuit...yum yum "Anzac Apple Crumble"

made some variations in the recipe though!
i added a bit of cinnamon powder, clove powder & nutmeg powder while cooking apples.
to the mixture, i added oats, coconuts & walnuts. and replaced with olive oil, wheat flour & brown sugar, for a healthier version.
    just yummy!!!

  26. It is SOOOOOO good that we have started to make it for our camps. some people may have variations but even without them it is just fine... thanks heaps

  27. is it okay to use other apple varieties other than granny smith? i have a wholt bunch of mini red apples at home and i LOVE apple crumble!

    ReplyDelete
  28. We have tested this recipe with Granny Smith apples although any type of apple could be used. When cooking the apples, you may need to adjust the amount of sugar and the cooking time if a different type of apple is used.

  29. Hi, i love apple crumble, but am highly allergic to nuts, what other suggestions do you have as to what i can use instead?
Coconut is not really preferable though - fussy kids!!!

  38. I made this recipe at home...yummy, but for Home economics at school i have to substitue apples for another type of fruit. Do you have any suggestions as to what fruit would be best with it... and with the new fruit, what other changes will i need to make?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hi Zoe,

You could use mixed berries, pears, peaches or rhubarb instead of the apples. Unlike apples, very soft fruits don't need to be cooked in a saucepan before oven baking. We recommend that you sweeten the fruit with sugar to taste.

  41. This recipe was simple and delicious - I had visitors last evening and it was the quickest dessert I have ever made - everyone loved it and a perfect winter sweet to finish off a home cooked meal. Thank you.
Have you got some other winter desserts? like Sticky Date pudding?

    ReplyDelete
  42. On the right hand side of this page, above the list of savoury recipes, we have a link to our index of sweet recipes. We have a recipe for individual sticky date puddings and other dessert recipes that would be suitable for winter.

  43. I made this for 12 people and they all said it was really good. Simplest and yet tasty recipe I have tried. I substituted half of the caster sugar in the topping however for brown sugar.

    ReplyDelete
  44. We have a nut allery in our family can you name a subsitute for the topping?

    ReplyDelete
  45. We sometimes make the crumble without nuts, and just omit them from the recipe without adding anything else or adjusting the other ingredient quantities. If your family member is not allergic to coconut, you could use about 1/3 cup of desiccated coconut as a substitute for the pecans/almonds.

    ReplyDelete
  46. In the topping I leave out the nuts and add coconut and crumbled corn flakes. Yum. This keeps the topping crunchy.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Thanks Bev for that extra info about adding coconut and cornflakes. Apple Crumble is so easy to make and is delicious too. From Joy

  48. I made this a couple of weeks ago & my in-laws requested I make it again, they loved it ! Though this time, I doubled the amount of apples so it was higher in my round pie dish, added cinnamon sugar whilst apples were simmering & doubled the ingredients for the top crumble, also adding oats. Thanks to everyone for the other comments on what to add - my crumble looks awesome !

  49. how would i make this canned apples, fresh apples at the moment is are just to expensive

    ReplyDelete
  50. I always make this with canned pie apples or other canned pie fruit. It always turns out great. I also find fresh apples too expensive to use for cooking. Season canned apples with a little extra sugar and a pinch of cloves or a few drops of vanilla.

  51. thankyou SO much for all of your recipes! Even my grandma (who is a fussy eater) said that she would never eat another apple crumble agian unless I made it. I'm 13 and am a beginner at cooking but all of your recipes i've tried to make have come out successfully!

  52. fantastic recipe. so simple and quick. watching the tennis - it's in the oven before the first set.

to the apples i added cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves, and sweetened it with dried fruit like sultanas/dates instead of sugar.

in the topping (to keep it crunchy and crumbly) i used oats, coconut, processed bran, corn flakes and linseed (also brown sugar instead of caster sugar for extra flavour).

great use for the over-ripe apples lying around. thanks!

  62. Hey guys,

This is the best apple crumble recipe on the net. Requires cinnamon to be added when stewing the apples or the recipe becomes a tiny bit pedestrian. Due to the fact that I cook this in a lasagna dish (yes it's that popular) I find that doubling the recipe to allow for the additional capacity is essential. This dish has quickly become a stable favorite of my best mate's wife to the stage that it a requirement to get an invite over.

  64. This apple crumble was soo delicious. I've had this site bookmarked for over a year. Just a few days back, my in laws came over and I thought I'd try out the apple crumble. It was such an easy bake and came out just right. If you refridgerate it for a day the flavour sets in really really well. Very very nice recipe, hope to see and try more. Thank Amanda and Debbie

  65. Is it possible to cook in individual sized ramekins? If so should temp and/or time be adjusted? Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I made this for the first time and it tasted nice :-) .

I used the food processor to make the topping but found there wasn't enough, so I made more topping (ended up using almost double).

I used brown sugar in the topping and found that it was a little bit on the sweet side, so next time I would probably use slightly less sugar.

It also tasted really nice at room temperature with some cream.

  67. Made this for the first time tonight. Absolutely delicious! My 18 month old ate all his dinner for a change (your shepards pie) and loved dessert. Thank you, because of this site, I consider myself not a bad cook!
